| Interview with David Shrigley, Argentinan Magazine, 2004 |
Which are the influences in your work? artists and also any cultural influence... I've always liked Rene Magritte and Phillip Guston a great deal. I also am a great admirer of the writer Donald Barthelme. I've also always loved Joseph Conrad's books but I'm not sure his influence on me is so obvious as those I have just mentioned. How would you define your style? I would define it as amateurish and oddball, like the doodles of an autistic pre-pubescent Do you agree with the definition that your "art is amateurish and oddball, like the doodles of an autistic pre-pubescent" (the observer)? I guess so Are you surprised to be a cult following artist? what do you think people like most of your work? I think having a 'cult' status is a nice way of saying that you are not very well known. I don't know why people like my work. I like my work, but I never expected many other people to like it too. Did you feel the support of other scottish artists? such as Franz Ferdinand? Did they let you know about their fanatism on your work? Franz Ferdinand have said some nice things about my work which I find very flattering. They are the coolest band around. Glasgow is quite a small place without many opportunities so creative people are supportive of each other. Do you feel part english and part scotish? how does that work on you? I am a citizen of the world. As an artist who have developed almost all your carreer in Scotland, do you remember the the famous dialogue in trainspotting about being scottish? Yes. I think it's very apt. How is an ordinary day in your life? Pretty ordinary. Is it true that you have ordered your cds by colour? Which one is the first and which one the last? Yes. First one is Daft Punk 'Discovery' (black). Last one is John Spencer Blues Explosion 'Orange' (silver (strangely)). Plans for the future... To make films |
